Article explain the interpretation of sign exchange based on the
traditional knowledge and materials/discussion with
my Guruji. Parivartana as type of yoga, cause of change and reversals. Examples included.
Parivartana Yoga
Definition
Based on Monier Williams Dictionary the word Parivartana means:
- Causing to turn round
- Turning or whirling round, moving to and fro
- Revolution, end of period
- Barter, exchange
- Cutting or clipping the hair
- Protecting, defending
- Inverting, taking or putting anything in wrong direction
- Requital, return
- One of the names of Ṣrī Kurma Avatara
Parivartana means exchange of placements and brings complete reversal or change of effects; for some calculations planets behave like being in svakshetra avasthā due to this type of yoga. Whilst analysing some placement as the referal point like Lagneśa or determining the sex of those who are related to us we should take this yoga into account as this has the potential to reverse/alter our predictions. This yoga should be analysied in all vargas and specifically Rāśi, Navāṁśa and Shastyamsa for overall change or transformation. Distrubution of energy and blessings can be very dynamic, its way, nature and associated events are possible to be read from the chart. As the yuti is more connected to word ‘and’, parivartana can refer to word ‘instead’.
Formation
Planet A being in the sign lorded by planet B and planet B being in sign lorded by planet A;
Example: Candra being in Mithūn, Budha being in Karka. Mithūn Rāśi is lorded by Budha, whilst Karka Rāśi is lorded by Candra.
Parivartana is the stronges type of yoga which is the relation between the planets leading to experience (anubhava) of the soul in particular Daśa.
Table: Four type of Yogas
Name | Formation | Level of interaction |
Parivartana | Exchange of signs | 100% (purna) |
Yuti | Conjunction of two planets in rāśi/bhāva | 75% |
Graha dṛṣṭi | Mutual (samdrsti) planetary aspect of two planets | 50% |
Partial drsti | One planet aspects the 2nd one, whilst the 2nd aspects the sign of the first one | 25% |
Interpretation
Table: Three types of Parivartana
Rāśi | Rāśi based parivartana in Rāśi or Navāṁśa |
Jiva | Nakśatra lords exchange |
Kāraka | Kāraka of houses exchange |
Rāśi Parivartana
These shows the change between the planets on levels of bhāva, tattva, guṇa and avasthā.
Guṇa – essence of change
Guṇa means quality, peculiarity and attribute of property.
Table: Guṇa and Grahas
Satva | Sūrya, Candra, Guru |
Rajas | Budha, Śukra |
Tamas | Shani, Mars, Rāhū, Ketū |
Refer to Bhagavad Gita or Srimad Bhagavatam (Canto 11th) for more information.
This in parivartana shows impact on the world, if its auspicious (upliftment to higher guṇa) or inauspicious (or detoriation to lower level).
Tattva – type of activity
Table: Tattva
Tattva is the essence of substance of anything as the first elements in the creation proccess (srsti).
Tattva | Deva | Grahas |
Akasha | Vishnu | Guru |
Agni | Surya/Shiva | Sūrya, Maṅgala, Ketu |
Vayu | Rudra | Śani, Rāhū |
Prthvi | Ganesha | Budha
|
Jala | Devi | Candra, Śukra |
This shows sambandha between the type of energy, if the tattvas are friendly then they are mutually cooworking and this is auspicious, reverse for the inimically disposed tattvas.
Dīptādi Avastha
In Rāśi parivartana analysis we should take the dīptādi avasthā into account as if one of the planets is nica (debilitated) then the one element of parivartana will fail/suffer in course of exchange proccess.
Bhāva – circumstances
This element of the interpretation relates to object or occurences taking the part in the exchange.
Based on the lordships involved Mantrasvar (author of Phaldipika) makes the following categorisation:
Dainya | Between dusthāna lord and other auspicious bhavesha | The dasa of lord being placed in auspcious bhāva brings the auspiciousness related to its yoga, oppoite for the lord being placed in dusthāna; coming in and out of suffering |
Maha | Between two auspicious bhaveshas | This can be rājayoga based on the lords involved; among these three this is auspicious; blessings of Ṣrīmati Lakśmi |
Khala | Between 3rd lord and other lordship | 3rd lord dasa will be auspicious, opposite for the 2nd lord of parivartana. Bhavatna Ratnakara also has similar śloka about the 3rd lord related to yuti type of Yoga; Khala in Avasta refers to bad sign placement |
Table: Bhavas
# | Bhava | Karaka | Elements associated | Type |
1 | Lagna/Udaya | Su | Taste (rasa), name (nama), health, intelligence (dhi), prāṇa, birth (janma), presence (vartamana) | Kendra, Trikoṇa |

4 | Matri/Sukha | Mo | Mother (matri), education and knowledge (vidya), family, comforts, vehicles, relatives (bandhu), nose | Caturasraya, Kendra |
5 | Mantra/Putra | Ju | Mantra, children (santhana), power (rājayoga), emotions, love, authority, students, future (bhavisya), discrimination (viveka), paravidya (spiritual knowledge) | Trikoṇa, Paṇaphara |
6 | Shatru/Yuddha/Danda | Sa | Shadripus (weaknesses), enemies (shatru), diseases rising due to shadripu, legal cases, war, danda | Dusthāna, Upacaya, Apoklimā, Trisahadaya |
7 | Vivaha/Asti | Ve | Marriage (vivaha), serious partner (bharya) | Kendra, Maraka |

If the yoga is involving Lagna, Lagnesha or Ārūḍha lagna the it brings the transformation upon the native, the planet which has the yoga with mentioned points will show the final result of it. Charakarakas involved will show people engaged/associated with the transformation.
Example:
In the above example Rāhū and Surya are in parivartana and the 2nd group is Shani and Budha. As Shani is on Lagna it will show the final stage of parivartana. When it comes to lagnesha then Kuṁbha sign will show the final stage of transformation. Transformation of direction and attitude is expected due to involvment of Lagna and Lagneśa.
Budha with malefic in sixth house gives person who is opposing the order of society. Person was involved in animal liberation pursuits for a long time, then after some time person turn into spiritualism and especially yoga. Shani is in lagna and Moon is in 12th house which shows brāhma-ṇa yoga. This transformation has occured during 2007/2008 and it was period of Śani dasa. Altough the Shani shows lower guṇa, its involved in the spiritual yoga and controlling the vyana prāṇa in the heart is responsible for spirituality. Śukra playing the role of karmesh from Candra is enormously strong in the bādhaka sthāna hence the person moved to foreign country – United Kingdom from Poland. Śani is Darakaraka so the person has moved with the girlfriend.

Navamsa Parivartana
Its the 2nd type of parivartana. Formation is same as for Rāśi parivartana but the varga chart of the focus is the Navāṁśa. Rāśi,Navāṁśa and Śastiamsa are for all spheres of life and prarabdha karma can be deciphered from those. This will show the quality of people changing and should be analysed for the Antaradaśa level of Daśa. Examining the position in Rāśi will show the manifestation of occurence. The exchange of Daśa Grahas is actual for this type of parivartana.
In the above Navāṁśa chart Rāhū is placed in the Śukra Rāśi, whilst Śukra is placed in Rāhū sign – Kuṁbha. There is also Guru-Ketū parivartana occuring in Rāśi chart. Aśtottari and Shodaśottari are not applicable but lagna is Vargottama and Śatabdika Dasa can be the prognostication tool to consider. Using Vimśottari Shukra Mahadasa was from 1989 to 2009 and person has been ailing for the jaw inflammation. 8th lord being in Vṛṣabha Rāśi shows adhistana (place of disease) in the region of mouth. Rāhū being in the rasis lorded by the rogesh shows viral cause of problem. Inflamation is seen from the Triṁśāṁśa. Rāhū being involved in the yoga has bring these experience to the native in Shukra Mahadasa showing proving Navāṁśa-parivartana principle to be right and accurate.
Sūkṣma Parivartana
Definition
Sūkṣma means acute, subtle, feeble, insignificant, minute, small, fine, thin, narrow, short, nice, exact, precise, atomic, subtle all-pervading spirit and is one of th 9 Shaktis of Vishnu, it also refer to Vedanta philosophy.
Formation
Sūkṣma parivartana occurs when there is exchange between vimśottari-nakśatra lords.
Interpretation
This type of parivartana shows occurents in the social background, impact of the society and the transformation of attitude related. We are advised to examine Mahadasa from the Candra. Benefics show usually good impact, opposite for the malefics. The meanings of the bhavas from Candra Lagna should be understood during estimation of phala (results). Mahadasa from Moon shows how society approach the person and the result will be seen by the exchange graha which we call Śiva (end result of transformation).
Example:
Graha | Nakśatra | Vimshottari-Lordship |
Sūrya | P.Bhadra | Guru |
Candra | Dhanistha | Maṅgala |
Maṅgala | Dhanistha | Maṅgala |
Budha | U.Bhadra | Śani |
Guru | Krittika | Sūrya |
Śukra | Aświni | Ketū |
Śani | Aślesha | Budha |
Rāhū | Chitra | Maṅgala |
Ketū | Aświni | Ketū |
Sūrya is in Purva-Bhadra nakshatra lorded by Guru, whilst Guru is in Krittika star lorded by Sūrya. Hence the Sūkṣma-parivartana occurs between Surya and Jupiter.

Moon: 2083-12-28 (6:46:53) – 2093-12-27 (20:17:06)
Jupiter (Shiva graha in Graha-malika yoga) being in the seventh house should bring the focus on the relationship being in vivaha bhāva and in fifth from Moon as the fifth lord – house of emotions and progeny. Instead person is fully focused on the spirituality (mīna rāśi) and work – Sūrya+Budha yoga (nipuna) with the Ārūḍha lagna. Surya is tenth lord and 8th lord from Moon bringing both spheres of life. Surya being in Karka-amsa which is the fifth house from Mīna brings a lot of focus on recitation of Buddhist mantras. There is no connection between Sūrya and stronger Lagnesh Ketu showing person rejects birth-religion. Mars, Rāhū and Śukra however bring the sambandha between lagnesh and Guru showing spiritual interest. Mars refers to ahimsa, Rāhū to foreing influence and lot of abstract and dhyana (12th house), whilst Shukra with Ketū in sixth shows that this will be strengted and maintained by celibacy (brahmacarya).
Its interesting that the next Daśa of Shukra has Sūkṣma parivartana with Budha. Shani being in seventh from Moon shows many traditionalists and succesful- rājayoga (Shani in cancer) people will approach the native, but the results will cause even more spirituality as Budha is nica in Ārūḍha lagna contributing to pravrajayoga.
Kāraka Parivartana
Definition
Kāraka means instrument which brings about the action denoted by the name.
Formation
This type of parivartana occurs when the bhāva karakas of the two houses exchange theirs placements.
Table: Bhāva and Kāraka
# | Bhava | Karaka |
1 | Lagna/Udaya | Su |
2 | Dhana bhava | Ju |
3 | Bhratri/Parakrama | Ma |
4 | Matri/Sukha | Mo |
5 | Mantra/Putra | Ju |
6 | Shatru/Yuddha/Danda | Sa |
7 | Vivaha/Asti | Ve |
8 | Randhra | Sa |
9 | Guru/Dharma | Ju |
10 | Karma/Indra | Me |
11 | Labha/Hara | Ju |
12 | Vyaya | Sa |
Interpretation
Result of this yoga is that people are exchanging their roles. For example friends can act as native’s enemies, father can act more like a friend for the person. The main kāraka for the bhāva should be seen for that scenario to occur. This can involve associates of native’s or the events being presented in one’s life. Yoga involved shows the occurences associated with the parivartana.
In the example Shani the kāraka for sixth house is in fifth, whilst the fifth house kāraka – Guru, is in sixth house. The kāraka parivartana is present in the chart. Fifth and Eleventh shows open and hidden or unknown wellwishers respectively, whilst sixth and twelfth shows open and hidden enemies.
We can use Aśtottari Dasa per the following conditions:
Conditions (both must be applicable):
- Rāhū in kendra/trikoṇa to Lagneśa.
- Birth in Kṛṣṇā Paksha and Daytime OR in Śukla Paksha and Nighttime
At the border of 2009/2010 the friend of the native has become acting like an enemy against the goals of the native. This was related to the apartment conditions as forth lord from Moon – Śani and Ketū are being engaged in the yoga. This was very open debate so the fifth and sixth bhavas are involved. Ketū being in third from Ārūḍha lagna describes the type of strategy of the native being very fixed (sthira rāśi) and unforgiving (Vrscika the sign of nica for the Ćandra). Naturally these should be expected in the dasas of grahas involved in the yoga:
Planets involved in Yoga are Ketū /Jupiter on one side and Shani+Candra.
